Stepping into a long-established manga role comes with unavoidable pressure, and David Dastmalchian felt that weight while preparing to play Mr. 3 in One Piece Live Action Season 2
Mr. 3, also known as Galdino, is a major antagonist introduced during the Little Garden arc, known for his calculating personality and Wax-Wax abilities. The character has been shaped for decades through manga and anime, giving fans a clear sense of his voice and mannerisms.
Dastmalchian said he approached the role knowing he wasn’t creating the character from scratch. Instead, he was inheriting a version already deeply familiar to audiences.
To prepare, he revisited anime performances and studied the manga, but avoided direct imitation. Rather than copying previous portrayals, he focused on capturing Mr. 3’s core traits while adding his own interpretation.
He described the character as calm, artistic, and methodical, explaining that the real menace comes from Mr. 3’s quiet confidence and admiration of his own cleverness. For Dastmalchian, adaptation requires creative risk, not replication.
David Dastmalchian Reflects on the Physical Transformation For Mr. 3 Role
The actor also acknowledged the intense expectations of One Piece’s fanbase, admitting he felt nervous about how viewers would respond to his take on the character. Still, he expressed confidence in the work and appreciation for the support of the creative team, noting that the pressure feels especially personal since his son is also a fan of the series.
Physically, the role demanded hours of daily hair and makeup, full-body grooming, and the creation of Mr. 3’s signature “3” hairstyle. Large practical sets built for Little Garden further heightened the experience.
Dastmalchian described Mr. 3 as having a quiet psychopathy, someone who enjoys moments of stillness while reflecting on his own achievements.
Bringing the character to live action meant balancing faithfulness with reinvention, guided by respect for Eiichiro Oda’s original work.
As One Piece Season 2 moves into darker territory, Mr. 3’s arrival marks a shift in tone. For Dastmalchian, it meant embracing fan scrutiny while staying focused on performance.
What makes it unique other than just… because otherwise you just have AI do it, right? Otherwise you could just be like, give us a computer-generated printout of what would be an amalgam of what everyone already loves. You have to take some risks. You have to bring yourself to it.
