Stepping into the world of One Piece isn’t like joining an ordinary television production, it’s walking into a fandom that’s been alive for decades. For David Dastmalchian, taking on the role of Mr. 3 meant entering a universe where millions of fans already carry deeply personal ideas about who this character is.
That reality brought excitement, but also vulnerability. During our conversation, Dastmalchian spoke candidly about fan expectations while building his own interpretation of the wax-wielding antagonist.
Mr. 3 exists across manga, Japanese performances, English dubs, and countless fan imaginations, leaving little room for anonymity and no room for indifference.
He approached the role with careful study, analyzing anime vocal rhythms, manga gestures, and physical posture. But he was equally clear that imitation alone isn’t acting. Performance requires interpretation, and interpretation carries risk.
The Risk of Reinterpretation
One Piece is famous for its exaggerated personalities, including signature character laughs. Dastmalchian confirmed he developed a unique chuckle for Mr. 3, honoring tradition while filtering it through his own instincts.
He admitted that making those choices can feel exposed. When an actor reshapes a legacy character, reactions are inevitable. Some fans will connect immediately. Others may struggle if it doesn’t match what they imagined.
What makes it unique other than just… because otherwise you just have AI do it, right? Otherwise you could just be like, give us a computer-generated printout of what would be an amalgam of what everyone already loves. You have to take some risks. You have to bring yourself to it.
To protect that creative space, Dastmalchian sometimes steps away from social media. Once filming wraps and decisions are locked, online commentary can’t change the work, only how it feels to carry it.
He emphasized that this distance isn’t dismissal. It’s preservation.
But you want to bring your own take on it. These are the things, dude, that I honestly, I kind of have to detach myself at this point from the internet or social media because people are going to have their opinions.
Despite limiting his exposure to reactions, Dastmalchian stressed deep respect for the One Piece fanbase. He understands that intense responses come from passion, the same devotion that has sustained the franchise for generations.
For him, Mr. 3’s live-action debut represents one more chapter in a long lineage of reinterpretation. Not every viewer will respond the same way, and that’s part of adaptation.
As One Piece continues its live-action journey, Dastmalchian remains grounded in his approach: trust the craft, honor the source, and accept that stepping into an iconic role means learning how to carry both praise and criticism with equal restraint.
