The heartfelt music anime Girls Band Cry is set to expand its story with a brand-new film, following its successful television run and upcoming compilation movies. The announcement comes with a teaser visual, promising fans more of the inspiring journey of young women chasing their dreams in the bustling city of Tokyo.
Story and Concept
Toei Animation describes the anime:
The main character drops out of high school in her second year, aiming to enter university while navigating life alone in Tokyo. One girl is betrayed by her friends, unsure where to turn, while another struggles to survive after being abandoned by her parents. In a world that constantly lets them down, the girls find hope and belonging through music, expressing themselves and persevering despite challenges.

TV Anime and International Streaming
The Girls Band Cry television anime premiered in April 2024, running for 13 episodes. Toei Animation released the series digitally in North America on August 13, 2024, while Crunchyroll began streaming it on November 6.
The anime is also reaching international audiences through streaming services. Indonesia’s Catchplay+ started streaming the series on May 31, 2024, with both Indonesian and English subtitles, the first official English-subtitled release worldwide. Thai distributor Cartoon Club announced a Thai dub set to premiere in July 2024, marking the series’s first international dub.
Compilation Films
In addition to the new film, the anime is receiving a two-film compilation project. The first film, Seishun Kyо̄sо̄kyoku, will premiere on October 3, followed by the second, Naa, Mirai, on November 14. These films condense the story from the TV series, offering fans a cinematic experience of the characters’ struggles and growth.
Cast and Production Updates
Last year, cast members Mirei and Natsu went on a temporary hiatus for health reasons, with the remaining main cast—Rina, Yuri, and Syuri—continuing performances. By April 2025, Mirei and Natsu had returned to dialogue recording, ensuring the full cast is back for the upcoming film and ongoing projects.
What Fans Can Expect
The new Girls Band Cry film promises to expand on the themes of friendship, perseverance, and music that made the TV series a hit. With the return of the full cast and the momentum from both the TV anime and the compilation movies, fans can look forward to a cinematic experience that highlights the resilience and dreams of the girls in the series.
