BLACKPINK’s Jisoo has been facing backlash over her upcoming role in the movie Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint.
The controversy stems from changes made to the character she portrays, Lee Ji Hye, who is based on the historical figure Admiral Yi Sun Sin, a revered Korean naval hero.
In the recently released character posters, Jisoo’s character is depicted wielding a gun, a notable departure from the sword traditionally associated with Admiral Yi, sparking concerns that the film is distorting historical accuracy.

The movie is based on a popular web novel where the world of the novel becomes real, and the characters fight using special powers granted by “Constellations.”

Jisoo’s character, tied to Admiral Yi Sun Sin, represents one of these powerful figures.
However, fans are upset over this significant alteration, questioning the historical research behind the film’s world-building.
This controversy has roots in previous instances where historical references were edited out for global releases.

For example, references to Korean independence figures like Ahn Jung Geun and Yoo Gwan Soon were reportedly removed in earlier versions of the web novel, causing frustration among Korean fans who felt the content was being altered to appease Japanese audiences.
The anger intensified after the movie’s teaser was released, with netizens criticizing the decision to have a historical figure known for his battle against Japanese muskets be armed with a gun instead of his signature sword and bow.
Many fans feel that this and other changes reflect poor research and a disregard for the original material.
Reallize Pictures, the company behind the film, defended the changes, stating they were necessary for adapting the novel to the big screen.
However, while there was an explanation given for other characters’ altered weapons, no such clarification was offered for Jisoo’s character.
As a result, some netizens have expressed their disappointment so strongly that they are hoping for the movie’s failure at the box office, with comments like:
“I hope it flops.”
“An Jung Geun, Yu Gwan Sun, and Yi Sun Sin are all erased.”
“Since all of it is gone, they just won’t be able to act.”
The film is set for release in July, and it remains to be seen how the controversy will affect its reception.
Fans are especially displeased with the perceived erasure of significant historical figures and the way they feel the film is misrepresenting Korean history.
